Self Portraits Part 2

This morning we continued our journey of looking at ourselves and trying to recreate them. Since we have been using playdoh all week to do so, I figured it was time to upgrade to paper and pen. This was much easier for the kids to envision. I noticed that the kids had a hard time pretending the loose materials used were different parts of their faces, but when given a pen and paper they were able to begin to recreate their faces and bodies no problem!

N began naming all the different parts of face and his body as he drew.

"Eyes, mouth, legs, arms..."

It is always so interesting to me how kids go straight from making their head to adding arms and legs jetting out from it. As I watched N draw the arms and legs, I thought about how we don't normally address the torso when we start identifying our body parts. How do we start? What do we say? It's something that seems so obvious, but clearly, it's not.

T sat down no problem and immediately showed off how well he can draw a circle for his face! He then added several dots that he confirmed were his "eyes." Last I remember he only had two, but his determination was too good to pass up.

B was also ready to draw his face! He was excited to look into the mirror and then add all the lines he could. He also confirmed the many lines he drew were his eyes, mouth, and nose.

It's really enjoyable to be able to sit down and watch the kids draw and look at themselves. Our morning class is quite busy and constantly moving so it's always nice to take a minute to slow down and pay attention to one thing at a time. We love to see it!

Week 2 Day 2

Pine Family is rocking and rolling in week 2! We are having less feelings of sad, mad, and scared upon entering class and more happy and fun throughout the day!  Friendly reminders: Water bottles should only come to school filled with water (it's the best for our bodies and in case another student would accidently take a sip it won't cause harm), sunscreen should be applied before drop off (there is not a lot of shade and not a lot of time for us to get the kiddos all lathered up), and bug spray should be applied before drop off (this is mostly needed when we start going to the forest on Tuesdays, starting on Sept 12th). Thanks :)
