Making Music

We had quite the noisy morning this beautiful Tuesday! Today the boys got to practice their musical skills at meeting time and while playing outside! Ms. Julie joins our class every Tuesday and incorporates a lot of movement and music into our day. This morning the boys tried using 5 gallon buckets as drums! This inspired some more music once we got outside.

N is definitely our percussionist! He picked up a rhythm stick and began testing out different surfaces on the playscape to see if they made noises. He headed to the chimes with stick in hand. He furiously swiped the stick across the pipes. They rung out like an alarm across the playscape! Success!

Next, N headed over to some vertical pipes and gave them a whack with his rhythm stick. It let out a low hum. He continued to circle it until he successfully made each pipe sing different tones. He continued to walk around the area testing out sounds from solid wood structures, rocks, open ended tubes, and even the ground. N seemed quite pleased with himself as he made a few rounds during our time outside.

L parked himself over at the rock contraption. From the outside it just looks like a regular box, but on the inside there are a series of stacked wires. There are slits a the top of the box for the kids to slide rocks into. As the rocks go into the hole, they slide down the wires creating different tinging sounds. L was so excited to hear them!

L picked up rock after rock and placed them in the slit. He would sweep large handfuls into the opening and giggle with delight as the soft sound filled the air.

The boys interest in music and sounds is so fun to watch as they experiment with all kinds of materials inside and outside of the classroom. We will continue to make the mind and body connection with music as we move throughout this semester. Such a fun day!

Submarine Update

Yesterday the Pine friends continued their exploration on how to create a submarine out of a box. They first started drawing sketches of how it should look.  "It needs to have windows!" "We should make it yellow too." "It also needs a telescope (periscope)." Now that the drawing phase was complete, some friends wandered over to then build a submarine out of the blocks. They worked purposefully and explained the different parts as they worked.  "We need to cut out a circle for it to be the telescope." B, V, & E continued to work with one another and make compromises throughout their building in order to make the best version of a submarine as they could.  The three finished building their submarine, but noticed something was missing.  "It needs a propeller so it can move!" How could they make a propeller? What does a propeller look like? The kids got to work on some research about wh...

Happy Wednesday

How lucky are we that it was nice weather which allowed for much needed outside time!
