F & E started running down a path towards the fence. They stopped abruptly and watched the leaves on the trees rustle around as the wind blew. F picked up a handful of wet leaves and tossed them in the air. E noticed more leaves on the ground and tried it too.
"They are flying!"
For the next few minutes some of the boys tossed both dry and wet leaves in the air.
"Dry ones fly!"
How do the leaves fly?
The wind died down and the boys watched the leaves hit the ground rather than float through the air. It was time to move on. They raced back over some paths and ran into B who had a giant yellow leaf.
"Look how big this leaf is!"
He tossed the leaf into the air and watched it float to the ground. Friends around him started searching for the same large leaf.
"It needs air to fly. It needs like the wind!"
Soon the wind picked up and B threw the leaf into the air once more.
"The wind makes it fly like a paper airplane! We can make paper airplanes out of the leaves."
E & C found some big leaves and started throwing them in the air.
"They are flying around with the wind."
Where were all of the big leaves coming from? What tree could possibly be producing such large leaves? The kids started off on a leaf hunt.
Right outside of the forest the kids noticed a lot of leaves.
"These leaves are all so small. We have to find big ones!"
"Let's throw them in the air again!"
"Let's throw them in the air again!"
The wind seemed nonstop as the kids threw their leaves into the air countless times.
Then all of the sudden it stopped.
V tossed the leave up and it came straight back down.
"I think I need to blow it to make it fly."
V picked up her leaf and started blowing at it furiously as it floated around. She giggled and encouraged the others to do the same.
"If you blow it the leaves fly!"
The kids noticed all of the different things the wind was blowing and making "fly." We chatted about what can fly and what can't. It's been fun to notice the wind the last few days and even create our own in our classroom.
