Flour Power

The best part of capering is being able to be a part of the other classrooms and getting to work with materials they do. Today some Pine friends found tubs of flour in Dogwood to engage with. Their imaginative play began with two friends filling up bowls with the flour.

"I have three bowls. This is the ingredient bowl, my mixing bowl, and a flour bowl. I am going to make a cake."

E started sorting the flour into the three separate bowls laid out in front of her. She worked slowly as the flour sifted between her fingers.

"It's so soft!"

"I'm going to make a princess cake. It tastes like vanilla! That's my favorite flavor."

E continued to fill her "flour bowl" up and mix it around with her fingers. She worked with purpose as she packed the flour into the tin.

"It's almost ready. I am going to share it with everyone when it's finished."

As E finished her cake, V was also separating her flour into different sized containers.

"I'm making muffins! My muffins are Cookie Monster. It's my favorite from Serendipity. Serendipity has my sister's name Sarah in it!"

She continued to pack the flour into the tin mold as she described what the muffins would taste like.

"Cookie Monster has chocolate chunks. It tastes like vanilla ice cream!"

V finished making her muffins and offered for the other friends sitting at the table to taste them. She looked proud and would even giggle as her friends pretended to eat the muffins.

Capers are a great opportunity for all of the kids to visit other rooms are experience other activities and materials. Today was another great example of kids finding a different way to play with materials in another space.

Submarine Update

Yesterday the Pine friends continued their exploration on how to create a submarine out of a box. They first started drawing sketches of how it should look.  "It needs to have windows!" "We should make it yellow too." "It also needs a telescope (periscope)." Now that the drawing phase was complete, some friends wandered over to then build a submarine out of the blocks. They worked purposefully and explained the different parts as they worked.  "We need to cut out a circle for it to be the telescope." B, V, & E continued to work with one another and make compromises throughout their building in order to make the best version of a submarine as they could.  The three finished building their submarine, but noticed something was missing.  "It needs a propeller so it can move!" How could they make a propeller? What does a propeller look like? The kids got to work on some research about wh...
