What's with the Weather?

After capers the kids brought up how nice it was playing outside.
"I wasn't hot at all!"
"I was like really hot."
"Yeah me too."
"It was kind of windy."

Some friends sat down and began drawing other kinds of weather they were familiar with. E started furiously drawing with the red marker.

"Look! It's a storm."

"It looks like a tornado!"
"Yeah, it is a tornado."

"I can draw a tornado too! I am trying to draw something that sucks stuff in."
"Yeah, it's really strong!"

"I drew the ocean."
"Wow, it's bringing the waves here."
"It's a tornado in the ocean."
"It's a hurricane! It's something in the water that looks like a tornado."

"It's bigger in the ocean. It's the same size as a tornado."

B worked meticulously on creating small wave coming off of the swirl. He was careful to make each wave look like the last.

V took the opportunity to draw a tornado too.

"It's a tornado truck!"
"What does it do?"
"It's a truck for tornadoes."

"Hurricanes can be dangerous."
"Hurricanes aren't real! Tornadoes are real."
"No, they are both real!"

"Here are the clouds, it's raining. The red is the tornado."

"Tornadoes are actually green and hurricanes are red. If you see red, it's definitely a hurricane."

B created an elaborate picture containing all of the different weather the kids talked about. They are excited to continue the conversation next week and look a little deeper at some of the weather we see here in St. Louis!

Submarine Update

Yesterday the Pine friends continued their exploration on how to create a submarine out of a box. They first started drawing sketches of how it should look.  "It needs to have windows!" "We should make it yellow too." "It also needs a telescope (periscope)." Now that the drawing phase was complete, some friends wandered over to then build a submarine out of the blocks. They worked purposefully and explained the different parts as they worked.  "We need to cut out a circle for it to be the telescope." B, V, & E continued to work with one another and make compromises throughout their building in order to make the best version of a submarine as they could.  The three finished building their submarine, but noticed something was missing.  "It needs a propeller so it can move!" How could they make a propeller? What does a propeller look like? The kids got to work on some research about wh...
